Here's a list of ideas for your zero waste / sustainable journey. I hope this helps! As a preface:

Air fresheners

Air fresheners are packaged in plastic and contain toxic artificial fragrances.

  • Make a room spray using essential oils and water. Be sure to carefully dilute the essential oils; you just need a few drops. Store in a spray bottle. You can repurpose a used one.
  • Use essential oils in a diffuser with a glass basin, such as the Pilgrim Sofia Nebulizer Diffuser.

Decor
  • Use leaves or branches that have fallen in your yard or local park as table or wall decor.
  • Dry out fresh flowers as decor. I've had success with eucalyptus and billy balls. Soaking them in a mixture of water and vegetable glycerine helps them retain their color as they dry out.
  • Find decor at thrift stores, Craigslist, and Bunz.

Trash can
  • Consider composting to divert organic matter from the landfill, where it will have difficulty decomposing and will release methane, a greenhouse gas. If you have curbside compost pickup, that's great! Otherwise, if you have a yard you can start a backyard compost. And if you have an apartment, you can start a worm bin (not that a lot but not all food scraps can go in a worm bin—look it up to keep your worm babies happy).
  • Do a trash audit and note what you're throwing away. This will help you prioritize what waste you'd like to minimize. (link to waste audit)
